Pigmentation
Pigmentation commonly occurs on the skin due to the hazardous effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is abundant in sunlight.
Excessive sun exposure without any sun protection, such as sunscreen application, triggers the skin cells (melanocytes) to produce more melanin, which leads to brown blotches or hyperpigmentation on the skin. The amount of melanin in skin determines its colour and shade; the higher the melanin production, the darker the skin. An even skin tone indicates that this cell-protecting pigment is evenly distributed in the top layer (epidermis) of the skin.
The most common pigmentation concerns are melasma, post-traumatic pigmentation, post-acne pigmentation, sun-damaged spots, lentigines, freckles, hormonal imbalance, certain medications, chronic illnesses such as diabetes, and kidney-related issues. As there is a wide range of reasons why pigmentation may occur, there are various options for treatment, depending on the underlying issue. A detailed consultation and examination is necessary before embarking on a treatment.
